Biochemical Engineering

The Biochemical Engineering Laboratory, one of the main research groups in The Department of Chemical Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, was started since 1987. In the early years of the laboratory, the research work was mainly focused on the development of bioreactors which included batch, semi continuous, and continuous with the cell recycle bioreactors for the production of acetone and butanol from agricultural based raw materials. However, since 1990 the emphasis of work was shifted towards the use of membrane technology (microfiltration, reverse osmosis, emulsion liquid membrane, pervaporation, and reverse micelles) both for bioreaction and bioseparation due to its promising future. At present, research work in the laboratory is expanded to other fields of biochemical engineering such as tissue engineering and airlift bioreactor design, while fermentation and membrane technology are still of high interests.
