Chemical engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with chemical production and the manufacture of products through chemical processes. This includes designing equipment, systems and processes for refining raw materials and for mixing compounding and processing chemicals to make valuable products. It differs from chemistry mainly in the focus on large scales or commercial.
To do these jobs, chemical engineers must have a complete and quantitative understanding of both the engineering and scientific principles underlying these technological processes. This is reflected in our department curriculums, which include the study of applied mathematics, material and energy balances, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, energy and mass transfer, separations technologies, chemical reaction kinetics and reactor design, and process design.
Chemical Engineering at Chulalongkorn University was established in 1942, and was called the department of industrial engineering which, at that time, offered a curriculum of mechanical engineering and processing technologies (eg. sugar technology) combined. However this program was ceased in 1947 because of lacking of demand from Thai industries. Only two batches of chemical engineering graduates were produced.
This trait was only circumstantially true since later the industrial engineering department was reestablished in 1961 offering chemical engineering (Industrial Chemical Engineering) as its branch together with true industrial engineering (Industrial Plant Engineering). Later the ICE option became its own right department in 1975.
Over the past decades of development, the department has evolved to be the premier chemical engineering department in the country, both in terms of its teaching and research activities with the largest pool of staffs and research students.
The department is committed to provide education quality to chemical engineering students, who after graduation, can take responsibility in their respective careers in the society and industry. The department takes great emphasis on student to staff relations and interactions that would lead to a process of effective learning and character building. Practical industrial summer training program for senior chemical engineering students gives them opportunities to obtain the first taste of professional experiences. Through close supervision with the faculty members working on diversed areas of research, our graduate students acquire research planning, problem solving, and technical communication skills necessary for their future career advancement.
